St. John's point shows one of the 83 Eire signs, that were marked at different locations around the coast of the Republic of Ireland during World War II. They were arranged by David Gray, who was the American Ambassador situated in Dublin at the time.
The were used during World War II to show Ireland's neutrality to German, British and American air men.
St. John's Point is almost 11km long, and is one of the longest peninsula in Ireland.
The Lighthouse was built in 1825 and made from cut granite. The lighthouse tower was designed by George Halpin Senior, a well respected engineer from the area. The lighthouse came into operation in 1831 and was automated in 1932. It was finally converted to electric operation in the 1960's.
One of Lidl’s busiest Donegal stores is to close for 10 weeks to allow for the completion of major building work.
The Donegal Town branch is currently undergoing a major extension and when finished, it will be one of the largest Lidl stores in the country.
The choice was made to close the store to facilitate a quicker opening of the new store, so to enhance the customer's shopping experience, and be open in time for the Christmas holiday period.
Once completed, the store is said to be one of the largest Lidl stores in Ireland. hopefully the little bit of land to the left of the site will house a brand new Cinema in the future. Who knows?
UPDATE! Building of the new Lidl Superstore.
A week after I took the images of the old Lidl store in Donegal Town being demolished, and work is well underway in erecting the new Superstore. After speaking with many people who may have thought the building that was built behind the old store was going to be a warehouse. This may not be so.
After looking at images of other Lidl Superstores across Ireland, this now looks to be half of what will be the entire store after completion. The image below was taken from the McCallion Group website here.
And judging by the columns already erected in the new Donegal Town, the new superstore may look something like the image below. Taken from the Lidl Facebook page here. This shows the Dunshaughlin Branch which opened in 2018.
I aswell as many other people are still hopeful for our new cinema. Fingers crossed.
UPDATED! 10th September 2020.
The new Lidl store in Donegal Town is coming on great. With only a month to go until the new store is supposed to open, the main building has been completely erected and the solar panels have been attached.
More images to follow. Keep checking in. :)
Hi guys. I just want to say a big thank you to David Flanagan for sending me a copy of his new book "Exploring Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way: A Travel Guide to the West Coast of Ireland". As a photographer I'm always looking for new and exciting places to shoot. This is the perfect book for that, and let's you know where to go to get great images. When I'm out on the road now I always have this book with me. I particularly like the way the authors have given the longitude and latitude co ordinates to many of the places mentioned. This means I can enter them in to my Google maps app and not worry about getting lost anywhere. I can't recommend this book enough. A must for anyone wanting to travel along Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way and see the amazing sights it has to offer. :)
To get your copy of this must have book, go to Amazon here.
Winter is well and truly upon us, but this doesn't mean I can't get out and get some awesome images. I'll be posting some frosty looking winter shots soon. :)
